Getting Started

So you want to do yoga but do not know how to start? Here are some tips on how to start a yoga practice and maintain it.

1.     Start with a beginner’s yoga class. Yoga can be intimidating to some especially if you jump straight into an intermediate or advanced class. Finding a beginner’s class should not be a problem as many studio offers a variety of classes focused towards newer students. When you start at the absolute beginning, you have a stronger basis on which to develop your practice.

2.     Pick a class you actually enjoy. There are so many yoga classes out there so explore a variety of them. Try some different classes so you can decide on one you enjoy. It is not necessary to force yourself to go to a class. You are more likely to stop going if it becomes another chore.

3.     Pick a yoga instructor you like. This follows the previous suggestion. There are a lot of yoga instructors to choose from. Try to find one that you connect with. Each instructor has a specific way of teaching and it does not necessarily work of everyone. The more you like the instructor and the way they teach, the more fun you will have in class.

4.     Find a class time you can commit to. Do not pick a class that is difficult to get to on time. Find something that works with your schedule so you can go consistently.

5.     I do not usually recommend new student take online yoga classes but I understand that sometimes, this is the most reasonable option especially if you are limited based on location, time or financially. In this case, be sure to start with a basic online class and find someone that gives clear and precise instructions on the different postures. Bad habits are difficult to break so you want to be sure you learn everything correctly the first time.

I hope these tips helped. Good luck on your yoga journey! Namaste.
