Golden Milk Anyone?
Have you heard of golden milk? It is a mixture of turmeric, coconut milk, and coconut oil with a sprinkle of black pepper. Other ingredients may be added for taste such as cinnamon and honey. Just heat your coconut milk up and mix in the ingredients for a warm and tasty treat.
So why is golden milk such a big deal? TURMERIC! Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory that has been shown to have potential therapeutic effects on numerous diseases such as cancer. It also has antidepressant properties.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, turmeric contains a powerful antioxidant called curcumin. Antioxidants fight free radicals which damage cell membranes, DNA, and can even cause cell death.
Research suggests that turmeric may help with the following:
1. Indigestion or dyspepsia
2. Ulcerative colitis
3. Stomach ulcers
4. Osteoarthritis
5. Heart disease
6. Cancer
7. Bacterial and Viral Infections
8. Uveitis
9. Neurodegenerative conditions
As with anything, taking too much turmeric can have negative side effects. Some noted side effects include the following: nausea, upset stomach, increased risk of bleeding, hyperactive gallbladder contractions and hypotension.
Overall, as long as you do not overdo it, turmeric could be beneficial to your overall health. I have a glass at least three times a week!
Here is my favorite golden milk recipe:
1 cup milk substitute (I use almond milk)
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 tsp coconut oil
dash of black pepper
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp raw honey
I usually heat it stovetop to mix the ingredients really well and sprinkle with cinnamon before serving.
