Self-care
Self-care means something different for everyone. For me, it means getting my workout in, doing yoga (including meditation), and eating healthy. For others, it may be getting a massage or taking a relaxing bath. Whatever it may be, it is an important aspect of your life….yet, many do not make it a priority.
I understand that life can get hectic and time is precious, but burn-out is a real thing. A little self-care can go a long way in preventing burn-out and depression. Not only does stress affect you emotionally, it can also manifest itself physically. According to The American Institute of Stress, there are numerous physical disorders that have been linked to stress which include heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, and immune system disturbances that increase susceptibility to infections.
Our society stresses hard work with a “you can rest when you are dead” mentality. I do not agree with that. Although hard work is necessary for success, you should not have to sacrifice your health and well-being. There will never be extra time for self-care but rather you have to make the time. If it is important to you, you will MAKE time for it. Even if you can only spare 15 minutes a day, take it!
There is nothing wrong with enjoying your life everyday. Do not wait until you are older to allow yourself that pleasure. Do not wait until retirement to travel and enjoy the world. Go to yoga class, go for a walk and take vacations.
The biggest hindrance to self-care are the limitations you set for yourself.
