Adventures in the Bahamas

When we first started planning for our Bahamas trip, we really wanted to visit the Exumas rather than the much more populated Nassau. However, getting to the Exumas proved to be complicated. Flights to the Exumas were much more expensive than what we wanted to pay while ferry rides to the islands were too time consuming. Thus, we decided on Nassau and were not disappointed.

We stayed at an Airbnb versus the cookie cutter hotels and resorts downtown. We wanted a more authentic experience. There are many rentals listed on Airbnb but make sure you get one that is within walking distance to downtown Nassau and Paradise Island since most of the attractions are located in these areas.

We visited the most popular spots in Nassau as well as the more isolated parts, which proved to be the best! We spent a day walking downtown and did not run out of things to do and see. We highly recommend visiting the historical parts of the city. If you are short on time, definitely make an effort to see the Queen’s Staircase. Other spots to visit include the Straw Market and Bay Street (shopping galore). In addition, there are many water activities to partake in that leave from Paradise Island, which is next to downtown Nassau. We booked a speedboat trip to explore the Exumas and its famous swimming pigs. We also went on a sunset sailing adventure complete with dinner and drinks. Definitely check out the list of available tours and excursions there. Most of them even provide transportation to and from your hotel.

When you get tired of the overpopulated downtown Nassau, rent a scooter and explore the other side of the island! The beaches in West Nassau are way nicer than the ones downtown and a lot cleaner and isolated. If you want to enjoy the beach by yourself, these beaches are definitely worth the trip (the views on the way there are not bad either!). The restaurants in West Nassau are phenomenal. They are a little pricier than the ones downtown but worth it.

When visiting Nassau, it should be a priority to eat some of the local foods, such as the conch salad and rum cake. A great place to find these foods is Fish Fry, where atmosphere meets true Bahamian dishes. Locals frequently visit these establishments as well so you know it is good.

Overall, our trip to Nassau, Bahamas was great! Be sure to get out and explore!
