Sound Healing

What exactly is sound healing? I have heard of it before but I was not sure if I believed in its effects until recently. I honestly do not know why I was so apprehensive about it at first because I enjoy music and it always cheers me up when I am feeling down. Would it not make sense then that sound healing would actually work?

Through my research, I have discovered the definition of sound healing: a practice that employs the vibrations of the human voice as well as objects that resonate (tuning forks, gongs, Tibetan singing bowls) to stimulate healing. As it turns out, sound therapy is one of a growing number of subtle-energy therapies that make up the field of vibrational medicine. According to Experience Life (a whole-person magazine on health, fitness and quality-of-life topics): “each part of our bodies has its own natural resonance, and vibrational medicine is based on the idea that disease is a result of those natural resonances getting out of tune – whether due to stress, illness or environmental factors. As opposed to the highly focused and fast vibrations used in ultrasound, sound therapy works more gently – but just as powerfully – to return the body’s own vibrations to their natural states”.

Although there is not a lot of medical research on the topic, many MDs explain the effects felt from sound healing as resulting from the placebo effect distracting the mind and thus breaking the stress cycle.  Whatever the reason may be, many are reaping the benefits and have seen results.

There is still debate as to the possible health effects that sound healing may have. I personally think that you should try it at least once and see if it is for you. There are many yoga studios that now offer sound healing classes so it is easy to drop in on one. If anything, it would be a new experience to check off your list!
